Persephone - Goddess of the Underworld
Once upon a time, while playing in a flowery meadow with her Nymph companions, Persephone was abducted by Hades (The God of the Underworld), and carried off to be his bride.
Persephone's mother, Demeter (The Goddess of Agriculture and Fertility), despaired at her disappearance and searched for her throughout the world. When Demeter learned of her daughter's abduction she was furious, and refused to let the earth fruit until Hades returned Persephone. She created a great drought to convince the other gods to release Persephone from Hades.
As the drought claimed ever more victims, Zeus finally sent Hermes to persuade Hades to release his ill-gotten bride. However, because the girl had tasted of the food of Hades--pomegranate seeds--she was forced to forever spend part of the year with her husband in the Underworld.
Persephone's annual return to the earth in spring is marked by the flowering of the meadows and the sudden growth of the new grain. Her return to the underworld in winter, conversely, initiates the dying down of plants and the halting of growth.
